Biography

Alongside her colleague and friend Katie Steele, Tiffany Brown, PhD, LMFT, she is co-author of The Price She Pays: Confronting the Hidden Mental Health Crisis in Women's Sports―from the Schoolyard to the Stadium. The book highlights the trauma and mistreatment of women in sports and serves as a blueprint for systemic change. Having worked with athletes throughout her career and knowing how important it is to integrate mental health treatment in sports, she is fiercely committed to supporting athletes with their mental well-being.

Tiffany is also an award-winning senior faculty member at the University of Oregon Couples and Family Therapy graduate program and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who works with student athletes and provides mental health education for coaches and staff. She currently serves as Chief Science Officer for the Athletes Mental Health Organization, where she advocates for systemic change and provides resources to support mental health in athletes.

Tiffany's obsession with sports began when her grandfather taught her about golf, football, boxing and anything else they could see on TV. It was a means of connection for her, and she still cherishes those memories to this day. Her work culminates in an intersection of academia, advocacy and personal passion in creating meaningful change in mental health, sports culture and social justice.

Tiffany’s clinical research also focuses on substance use and recovery, collegiate recovery programs and self-harm. She received training in substance use and recovery through the Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery at Texas Tech University. She is committed to providing advocacy for people in recovery in hopes of shifting the social stigma attached to substance use issues, including the importance of discussing the racist, sexist and ineffective history of the “war on drugs.”

Tiffany is active in her local community, serving on several non-profit boards. She previously served as the treasurer of the Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE), the president for Carry it Forward (providing resources to unhoused community members) and board member for Ophelia’s Place (a prevention-based organization for girl-identified youth).

The Price She Pays: Confronting the Hidden Mental Health Crisis in Women's Sports

No matter the sport, the message to girls and women is the same: Be aggressive, but not too aggressive. Win at all costs but be polite while doing it. Get strong but not too big. Female athletes have long been conditioned to perform under these standards, gracefully and without complaints. Yet, behind the scenes, female athletes are suffering from disordered eating and substance use; depression and anxiety; emotional and sexual abuse; racism and discrimination; self-harm and even suicide ideation. But there is hope. Through first-hand accounts and research, Dr. Tiffany Brown--an expert in mental health and sports—lifts the veil on the crisis in women's athletics, offering parents and coaches urgently needed advice and support and showing how female athletes can find joy in whatever sport they choose, at whatever level they compete. You'll learn how to recognize the signs of mistreatment and mental health issues and how to correct course. You can provide women and girls with the support they need to thrive in whatever sport they choose, at whatever level they compete. Tiffany will show you how to get started.
