Biography
Carrots and Sticks Don't Work: the title says it all. Reward and recognition programs can be costly and inefficient, and they primarily reward employees who are already highly engaged and productive performers. In fact, these programs often lead to a decrease in motivation among average performers who represent the greatest potential for increasing an organization’s overall human capital. Unfortunately, most business leaders and human resource professionals are simply unaware of a more effective approach.
Dr. Paul Marciano’s strategies – supported by decades of research and practice – create an organizational culture of respect that results in a more effective organization, with reduced turnover and absenteeism and employees at all levels who are engaged, focused, and committed to succeed as a team. Rooted in the premise that human relationships only “work” within the context of respect, and anchored by seven key principles, application of the RESPECT Model leads to meaningful and enduring gains in employee morale and discretionary effort. In short, you get maximum ROI from your organization's most powerful resource: its people!
Marciano is a leading authority on employee engagement and retention. He earned his doctorate from Yale University in Clinical Psychology where he specialized in behavior modification and motivation. Additionally, he has served on the faculties of Davidson College and Princeton University where he taught courses in Leadership, Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Survey Development, Research Methods, and Statistics.
Marciano has worked in the field of Organizational Development for over 20 years and is President of the human relations consulting firm Whiteboard, LLC, a company committed to helping organizations cultivate, manage, and grow their human capital through consulting, training, executive coaching, facilitation, and team building workshops. He has worked with a wide array of clients including: pharmaceutical and manufacturing companies, sales and IT organizations, consulting firms, medical practices, schools, and government agencies.
In addition to public speaking, writing, teaching, and consulting, Marciano founded and runs ColorMe Company (ColorMeCompany.com) which produces children’s arts and crafts. ColorMe was recognized in 2007 by the Wall Street Journal as a leader in for-profit companies which give back to their communities. Marciano’s passion for entertaining and helping children comes by way of his grandfather, Ludwig Bemelmans, the author and illustrator of the classic children’s book Madeline.
Marciano is currently at work on the forthcoming book Super Teams: Using the Principles of RESPECT to Unleash Explosive Business Performance, in which he will explore how to build highly effective teams using his trademark RESPECT Model.
