Biography
Often referred to as “The People’s Wellness Expert” or a “Grassroots Sanjay Gupta,” Jeanne Ricks has taken her crusade from the streets to the auditorium with a mission to demystify all the myriad information about wellness. Her goal is to help people gain an understanding of how their body works and develop the tools to keep themselves healthy. As the Director of Holistic Wellness Programs for City College of New York, Ricks established practical programs to help people develop the inner resources to confront adversity and overcome life challenges.
Stress-management is one area where Ricks has made a considerable impact. Her idea is provocative but her prescription is surprisingly straightforward: incremental, easy-to-understand exercises done in real-time rather than the “lump sum” approach of reacting and responding to your life as a series of small fires that must be immediately stamped out. And the results are anything but modest: her approach has generated a ripple effect that has helped countless people overcome a litany of stress-related afflictions including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, weight gain, headaches, poor digestion, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, high cholesterol and insomnia.
How did it all begin? “I was sick and tired of being sick and tired,” Ricks says. The beginning of her foray into health and wellness came, like so many others, after a prolonged bout of illness. After 5 surgeries, the realization that there were alternatives to the costly fistful of medications was an epiphany. This experience sparked a quest for wellness which led her to earn certificates in Health Counseling through Columbia University’s Teacher’s College in New York and as a Holistic Health Practitioner through the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. She also earned certification as a Clinical Hypnotist through the National Guild of Hypnotists. In addition, she has completed training in Herbalism, including Traditional Chinese, Ayurvedic and Native American traditions. She's a current member of the Northeast Herbal Association.
For over a decade, Ricks has helped numerous people surmount challenges to optimal health through her Centered Eating for Restoration™ Program. Her outreach not only empowers the average person, but also reaches those battling obesity, diabetes, alcoholism, drug addiction, domestic violence, mental illness and the isolation that is often experienced by the elderly.
Jeanne Ricks’ new book, The Biology of Beating Stress, and her workbook Be More Stress-Less, recently became available in bookstores everywhere. Her lucid insights, signature warmth, and disarming humor are quite literally on display: Her book was featured in Barnes and Nobles’ self-improvement section for two weeks.
