Biography

Although Jayne has always been humbled by her success, her pre-eminence in contemporary American media was solidified when she recently stood face-to-face with her photo on the wall of the prestigious Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington D.C., inducted alongside Nat King Cole, Diahann Carroll, Nichelle Nichols, Diana Ross & The Supremes and Don Cornelius in Oprah Winfrey’s Pioneers in Television and the Media Landscape exhibit.

Beginning with her Hollywood debut in 1971 as a dancer on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, a singer/dancer with Bob Hope's Bases Around the World Christmas Tour entertaining troops during the Vietnam War, The Dean Martin Show 1972-75 as Dean’s singer/dancers.

Hosting major TV specials; guest starring on prime-time TV, starring in pilots and films; serving as a spokesperson for major global corporations including her six years with Coca-Cola USA. And as a producer; creating, writing, and hosting her pioneering Love Your Body fitness video series that ranked #3 in sales behind Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons; producing and starring in the films Death Force and Body and Soul, for which she won the NAACP Image Award for Best Actress, filled the 70s and 80s for Jayne.

However, Jayne is best known for her ground-breaking tenure on the Emmy Award winning CBS’ The NFL Today from 1978-1980. As one of the first female sports broadcasters and the first African-American female in that role, she destroyed the myth that women could not make it in the world of sports broadcasting. Bob Costas stated, “The NFL Today set the standard for modern sports pregame shows” and the combination of Brent Musburger, Jayne Kennedy, Irv Cross and Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder is often referred to as the best pregame show on television - ever! In February 2024, the Super Bowl pregame special, You Are Looking Live! chronicled the history of The NFL Today featuring Brent and Jayne, won the prestigious Emmy Award. Jayne was also featured in the best-selling book, In a League of Her Own – Celebrating Female Firsts in Sports, dedicating a chapter to each of the 16 female pioneers including Billie Jean King, Jackie Joyner Kersee and Jeanie Buss.

Ms. Kennedy is the only female to host one of television’s longest running nationally syndicated sports series, Greatest Sports Legends. She is also the first female to work ringside for menʼs professional boxing as a color announcer for Muhammad Ali Professional Sports. Jayne was also one of the very first women to host her own nationally syndicated TV sports show, The Jayne Kennedy NFL Report.

At a time when naysayers against female journalists filled every corner of the male-dominated sports world, some 40 years later the National Sports Media Association honored Jayne with their most prestigious NSMA Roone Arledge Award for Innovation in 2022. Moreover, Viacom/BET championed her as one of the "Ten Black Female Firsts in TV Journalism Around the World”.

In 2018, Black Enterprise's Women of Power Summit bestowed to Jayne the Legacy Award. And in 2019, Jayne hosted a ‘conversation’ for the International Womenʼs Conference at the United Nations in conjunction with Athletes United for Peace moderating the “Commission on the Status of Women” panel. As Co Executive Producer of a documentary short on her career in sports, Interception: Jayne Kennedy American Sportscaster that premiered at Marthaʼs Vineyard African-American Film Festival in 2019 and has since won multiple Best Documentary Short awards at subsequent festivals well into 2024.

Jayneʼs honors and awards are many: 2024 EMMY for You Are Looking Live, 1981 EMMY for her Rose Parade coverage; EMMY nomination for her Speak Up America segment on "Korea & the DMZ"; NAACP Image Award for “Best Actress” for Body & Soul which she also co-produced and earned a Golden Globe “Best Producer” nomination; NAACP Theater Award for “Best Producer” for her staged musical production of The Journey of the African American chronicling 400 years of African-American history in song and dance; Dream Award’s Trailblazer Award; and while still in high school, the Miss Ohio USA crown (the first African-American to win the Ohio title) sending her to the Miss USA/Universe Pageant, landing in the top ten; and then there is her most treasured title of the American Legion Auxiliaryʼs Girlʼs Nation’s - Vice President of the United States as the Senator from Ohio.

In the early 80s, Jayne was soon recognized as the face of corporate America as one of the first Black women in global brands that are really Fortune 50! And in that role, Jayne was in high demand as a corporate spokesperson for world-class companies such as Coca-Cola (TAB and Diet Coke), Reebok, Revlon, Fashion Fair Cosmetics, Esoterica, Jovan Fragrances, Bankers Systems and more. Teamed up with Butterick Patterns she created the Jayne Kennedy Fitness and Exercise line of patterns. And with the Children's Miracle Network Telethon as co-host for 17 years alongside Marie Osmond, Marilyn McCoo, Merlin Olsen, Jayne helped to raise $7.5B for Children’s Hospitals across North America.

In February 2025 the accolades and recognition continues, with Jayne being the recipient of the ‘Pioneer Award’ presented by GreenLight Women, an alliance of creative and business professionals over 40 whose mission is to champion women and promote diverse perspectives in entertainment and media. And in the same month, she received the ‘Pioneering Award’ from the inaugural Sedalia Film Festival.

Moreover, in recognition of Women’s History Month - March 2025, Jayne was prominently featured in a TNT network production entitled A Seat At The Table celebrating three generations of dynamic Black female sports broadcasters including Pam Oliver, Stephanie Ready and Taylor Rooks. And if that wasn’t enough, Jayne will be honored with yet another “Pioneer Award’ this August at the annual convention of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).

Breaking new ground is nothing out of the ordinary for Jayne. There seemed to always be a hurdle on the track as she raced through a career that brought her acclaim across many genres, which now include author, with her upcoming memoir Plain Jayne set to release fall 2025 on Disney’s imprint Andscape, with several Hollywood offers to develop a biopic and documentary on her amazing life and career under consideration.

Speech Topics

The Power of Faith & Family in Finding One's Purpose

Raised in a very tight knit family of six children, Jayne learned her responsibility to family and to God at an early age. Resources were modest, so she had to create opportunities for herself both within and outside the household by demonstrating in ‘deed’ her understanding of her role as a responsible citizen and follower of the Word. As an adult dealing with the vagaries of the entertainment industry, compounded by the obstacles of being a woman of color - she turned to faith to provide strength through difficult and challenging times.

Female Empowerment in Society & the Workplace

Coming of age in the 1960s when Title IX did not exist and women’s rights were just coming into vogue, Jayne was on the vanguard of pushing for gender equality in society. She was politically involved in Girl’s Nation in high school (nominated to represent her state in Washington DC). She then became the first Black woman to win Miss Ohio, starred in movies and television, and went on to co-anchoring the top rated pregame football show on CBS’ The NFL Today, which opened the door for generations of women entering sports journalism, broadcasting and entertainment media writ large. Jayne set the benchmark for female upward mobility and advancement in the 70s and beyond.

Overcoming Adversity in Life

Adversity began at a young age being raised in a nearly all white suburb of Cleveland, and being one of a handful of minorities in school. Learning how to navigate racism and sexism to achieve goals in her younger years (leading to dozens of scholastic awards), set the template for her achievement on a much larger scale in adulthood. Learning to cut out the noise and keeping her ‘eyes on the prize’ became critical to her remarkable career ascension.

Women in Sports Broadcasting

The precedent to competing in a male dominated environment as a female is knowing you are just as good, if not better than your competition. That requires guile, preparation and fearlessness. Overcoming the stereotypes that are attributed to women and minorities in any industry is a given. Understanding exactly what those ‘road blocks’ are and how to dismantle them requires deft analytical skills and the ability to execute a plan. Told that CBS was not looking for a non-journalist to fill Phyllis George’s vacant seat was the exact motivation that Jayne needed to disabuse the naysayers of that arbitrary edict

Setting Personal Goals & Achieving Success

The art of not taking ‘no’ for an answer. The only reason that she has so many ‘firsts’ in her biography is because she never believed she could not do whatever she set her sights on. “I was a dreamer and the sky was my friend” is a direct quote from her upcoming memoir Plain Jayne. Being told what ‘girls can’t do’ inspired Jayne to do just the opposite. Fortunately, being told she had no limitations at home infused her with the agency she needed to excel. Unfortunately, she did not have the advantage of the now often used adage “If you see it - you can achieve it”. There was no one who looked like her whom she could model her path on - so she knew she had to do it herself and pave one on her own. Bold. Persistent. Driven. Optimistically ambitious. All define the characteristics that comprise Jayne’s success.

The Disparity of Healthcare for Women of Color & the Impact of Endometriosis

Growing up eating healthy food from her extended family’s farm and in her mother’s garden, Jayne knew the importance of eating properly and the relationship between food and good health. Being active was always a primary interest in that pursuit, and in the 80s she was yet another ‘first’ as she developed a fitness program Love Your Body that became the third bestselling exercise video behind Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons. Moreover, she experienced a severe case of a then relatively unknown medical condition endometriosis, in which she became a national spokesperson for the National Endometriosis Association, with a special focus on women of color, who to this day have disparate health outcomes within the medical system compared to their white counterparts.

The Importance of Girls' Sports in Developing Strong Leaders

Statistics have proven time and time again, that young girls who participate in sports are more likely to succeed in business and in life. Jayne is a vociferous advocate of girls’ involvement in sports from K-12 and beyond and has developed programs to assist young girls in that effort e.g. fundraising, coaching/managing teams, local sponsorship outreach, obtaining college athletic scholarships, mentoring, etc.

Female Objectification & the Male Gaze

Being on multiple “Most beautiful women in the world” lists during her incredible career, this is a subject that cuts deeply both ways for Jayne. And while she does not deny that her physical beauty certainly played a factor in her success, she never defined herself by that alone and refused to let others only see her in that light. She did not have the protections of the #MeToo Movement and hence experienced some unpleasantries of the entertainment industry. Today she advocates for industry reform and is concerned that social media places an inordinate and pernicious degree of importance on ‘perfection’ and is concerned of the negative impact it is having on our youth - particularly young girls.

The Emerging Role of Women in Positions of Power in the Media & its Impact on Society

It is no dispute that women see the world through a different prism. One could argue a more empathic and inclusive perspective that allows for more humanity to emerge. America, and by extension Hollywood, is a very different place today than it was in the 60s-80s and being in a unique position to have lived through that evolutionary change has provided Jayne with a singular and informed view and outlook on how the integration of women in decision making positions of power has positively impacted the world by every measure.

Themes on Motherhood & How it Can Anchor One's Life

Maternal strength runs deeply throughout Jayne’s family for generations. Family is the pillar of her strength, confidence & power and motherhood provided her a sacred place of peace and fortitude when the outside world collapsed around her. From her personal experience of being in the limelight and then having all of that suddenly taken away, she found the love and raising of her daughters the most gratifying and positively indelible aspect of her entire life’s experience.

Community Service & One's Obligation to the Greater Good of Society

Jayne believes that life is about ’giving’ not receiving, yet another critical virtue learned at home. And while she has received many blessings in her life, she has always understood the responsibility that comes with being a celebrity. Without hesitation she offered her platform to support numerous organizations (local and national) over the years, lending her talent to the Children's Miracle Network raising billions of dollars and co-hosting the United Negro College Fund telethon with Lou Rawls, raising awareness for HBCU’s and ensuring that young Black scholars had an opportunity to attend institutions of higher education.

The Power of Mentorship.

In her memoir, Jayne writes about certain teachers who were fundamental in providing her encouragement and direction as she matriculated through high school. Unfortunately, there were not many in a position to mentor her in 1970s Hollywood. However, Sammy Davis Jr. and actress Marla Gibbs played pivotal roles in providing much needed advice and support during those burgeoning years, in addition to John Johnson owner of Johnson Publications. Jayne has gone on to mentor dozens of young students in both secondary and higher education, offering them specific skill sets to accomplish personal goals and aspirations, including offering guidance and counseling in the college application process. She has also conducted numerous ‘Masterclass’ sessions in the arts and sports journalism at the university level including, University of Southern California, Pepperdine University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, University of Colorado and others
