Biography
Known nationally and internationally as the woman who lived in one of the world’s smallest apartments, Felice Cohen is also the award-winning author of the bestselling books Half In: A Coming-of-Age Memoir of Forbidden Love (about a lesbian, age-gap affair she had at 23 with her boss, a 57-year-old woman that she kept secret for 30 years); 90 Lessons for Living Large in 90 Square Feet (...or More) (inspired by the YouTube video of her tiny NYC studio with over 25 million views); and What Papa Told Me, about her grandfather’s life before, during and after the Holocaust.
Endorsed by LGBTQ literary icon Rita Mae Brown (author of the groundbreaking novel Rubyfruit Jungle), Half In is an Amazon bestseller in seven categories and the winner of two book awards, including the Golden Crown Literary Society. 90 Lessons for Living Large, a “want to” guide motivating people to do more of what they love by letting go of extra stuff, is the winner of two Self-Help book awards. Thanks to that YouTube video, Felice has been featured on Good Morning America, the Today Show, NBC, CBS, NPR, Time, Globe & Mail, New York Daily News, the Daily Mail and more. Along with being featured in a documentary on tiny living, Felice speaks around the country about how living tiny made her life larger, as well as offering tips on organizing and decluttering. What enabled Felice to “live large” in that tiny studio is that she has been a professional organizer for over 30 years.
As the grandchild of two Holocaust survivors, Felice was inspired to write What Papa Told Me. The book won Honorable Mention from the Eric Hoffer Award for Books and Prose, as well as the New York Book Festival. The book has sold over 40,000 copies worldwide, been endorsed by Elie Wiesel and Yad Vashem: The World Holocaust Remembrance Center (in Israel), been translated into Polish, and has almost 1,000 reviews on Amazon. What Papa Told Me is in the libraries of the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. and other Holocaust museums and centers in the United States, the United Kingdom and Poland. The book has been ranked in the top ten on Amazon under Holocaust Education, and is taught as part of the Holocaust curriculum in schools across the US. Felice is featured in two documentaries focusing on grandchildren of survivors and has spoken to tens of thousands across the country. She is a featured speaker with the American Program Bureau, the Jewish Book Council, and the Jewish National Fund.
Ms. Cohen has contributed chapters to several anthologies including: Beyond the Shelves, I Bared My Chest, Habits and Attitudes, In the Shadow of Memory: The Holocaust and the Third Generation, The Truth About the Fact, and For Daddy, With Love. Felice also writes the animated book series: The Fancy Tales that puts a modern spin on the classic fairy tales by containing LGBTQ characters, with all the magic happening in New York City’s Central Park. A few of these tales include: She’safella, Peter Pan Zee, Jack and The Bad Stock, Beauty and The Butch, and Goldie, Lox, and the Three Schmears.
Ms. Cohen teaches the writing workshop “From Pain to Published: Turning Heartache into Memoir,” helping people to narrow down and begin writing their story, as well as how to stay motivated to finish it. A former weekly opinion columnist for the New York City newspaper amNewYork, Felice has also written for the New York Daily News and the Cape Cod Times. Felice graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she was a weekly opinion columnist and the first Jewish Affairs Editor for The Daily Collegian, New England’s largest college daily at the time. She splits her time between Manhattan and Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
