Politics & Culture Wars: Managing the “Noise”

Putting students first can't just be a slogan, it must be a strategy. Leading schools today demands the instincts of a politician, the skills of a diplomat, and the resilience of a leader who can rise above the chaos. In an era of culture wars, union tensions, and school board battles, Banks shares how he forged alliances—like his powerful partnership with the United Federation of Teachers—and led the nation’s largest school system to deliver real results. This keynote is a masterclass in cutting through the noise, balancing competing agendas, and showing up ready to fight—not for slogans, but for solutions that transform schools and change lives.

What Is the Purpose of School? Rethinking Education for the Real World

At its core, school exists to prepare young people to succeed in the real world. Yet, too often there is a limited connection between the classroom and the work skills needed for economic success. Banks challenges us to reimagine education—connecting schools to the business community and embracing 21st-century tools like AI to equip students with skills for the future. He shares bold ideas for transforming education: aligning curriculum with real-world opportunities, fostering hands-on experiences with industry professionals, and leveraging AI to reimagine how students learn, teachers teach, and schools thrive.

What I Did to Change NYC’s Reading System

Across the nation, reading proficiency is in crisis. 37% of fourth graders scored below the NAEP Basic level in reading, indicating a significant portion of students are not meeting basic reading expectations. In New York City, more than half of elementary students were not proficient, including two-thirds of Black and Latino students. Under his leadership, NYC launched NYC Reads, a historic shift to embrace the science of reading—a proven, phonics-based approach that empowers students to succeed.

In this keynote, Banks shares how he wrangled the system into a singular, evidence-based approach to literacy, tackling resistance, uniting educators, and making reading a front-and-center priority for the nation’s largest school system.

Soar: How Boys Learn, Succeed & Develop Character

When a shocking 75% of New York State’s prison population was found to come from just six neighborhoods in New York City, Banks knew something had to change. At the heart of the crisis was a deeper truth: the challenges facing boys were being overlooked, and their futures were at stake. Drawing from his groundbreaking book, Soar and his nationally recognized model for success, Banks shares proven strategies for how boys learn, succeed, and develop the character needed to thrive. From understanding their unique learning styles to harnessing the power of mentorship and creating supportive environments, Banks offers a blueprint for unlocking the full potential of boys everywhere—because when boys soar, families, schools, and entire communities rise with them.

Meeting the Moment: Leading Through Crisis with Courage & Conviction

When educational leaders nationwide faced unprecedented scrutiny—some losing their positions after high-profile testimonies before Congress—Banks was called to the same stage, carrying the weight of expectation. From being subpoenaed to testify before Congress during a national reckoning on antisemitism to navigating an FBI investigation in the final months of his tenure as Chancellor of NYC Public Schools, Banks faced crises that could have derailed even the strongest leaders. Yet, every day, he showed up—before cameras, in the media, and in his role leading the largest school system in the country—delivering results with the unwavering focus and integrity he’s known for.

This keynote is a powerful testament to meeting the moment in times of crisis, offering audiences insight into how to remain steady under fire, lead with courage, and turn challenges into defining moments of leadership. With conviction and clarity, Banks inspires others to rise and perform when the stakes are at their highest.

Education & Public Safety: It Takes a Village

They say it takes a village to raise a child—but what does that look like in action? In this powerful presentation, Banks shares how Project Pivot, a groundbreaking initiative uniting over 250 community-based organizations, is transforming public safety and student success in NYC schools. Banks reveals how partnerships with mentors, tutors, and trusted community leaders—many from the very neighborhoods they serve—are breaking cycles of violence, offering safe passage, and opening doors to opportunity.

Through real stories, proven strategies, and a bold vision, Banks challenges audiences to rethink how schools and communities can work together to meet young people where they are. This isn’t just about safety—it’s about creating the conditions for children to thrive. Join Banks as he shows how, when the village shows up, the future changes for all of us.
