Biography
The breakout star of Netflix’s Emmy-nominated Indian Matchmaking Seasons 1 and 2, Aparna Shewakramani became an overnight ambassador for those women demanding to have their voices heard - not only in their choices for a life partner, but also in the workplace, in their homes and in every space they occupy. Ever transparent about the vitriol she experienced ranging from cyber bullying to death threats, Aparna spoke her truth and shared her personal story with over 200+ media outlets since the airing of Season 1 in July 2020, including features in the New York Times, Washington Post, O Magazine, Time, Refinery 29, PopSugar, Grazia, Vogue India, Today.com, CNN.com, Betches, Travel + Leisure India and the Guardian. She’s been invited on over 75+ podcasts and has been on The Tamron Hall Show, Late Night with Lilly Singh and Kal Penn Approves This Message.
Aparna took her own story from the press straight into writing her first memoir, She’s Unlikeable: And Other Lies That Bring Women Down, published in March 2022 by Chicago Review press and in April 2022 by HarperCollins India. Her first book explores a behind-the-scenes look at her unwitting role in a reality series and her "rules to living an authentic life" - a very specific lifestyle with 11 rules (fittingly 11 chapters) that she shares with charm and candor. A best-seller in India and widely read in the US and Canada, She’s Unlikeable appeals to women everywhere who are determined to reclaim their own narrative.
Prior to her debut into the public eye, Aparna practiced law full time for ten years and received her JD from Vanderbilt Law and a BA from Rice University. She is now two years into her journey as a “recovering attorney” and has pivoted her career to writing full time. With several projects in development ranging from feature screenplays to creating a docu-feature which places her both behind and in-front of the camera, Aparna will continue storytelling from her unique point of view. While career driven, Aparna remains relatable, genuine and unapologetically herself both on and off camera. Armed with her feminine style and direct way of speaking, she is certainly not one to fit into the mold - which is exactly why the world fell in love with her! Born in London and raised in Dubai and then Houston, Aparna is currently a nomad with extended pit stops in Texas and NYC.

Reclaiming Your Narrative in the Workplace & Beyond
Aparna begins with an overview of the tropes of women that start at a young age and are then perpetuated into the planes of corporate America, politics, pop culture and even their personal lives. She uses personal methodologies that dismantled these tropes on a macro-scale when she was misrepresented on a global stage through a TV show. She touches upon the cyber bullying, public vitriol and even the death threats she received once the show aired. Recognizing that most women will not deal with a global onslaught of misrepresentation, Aparna ties the same principles of deconstructing others’ narratives to a woman not in the limelight but still facing the frustration of being misrepresented. With renewed focus on tropes, Aparna tackles the “Boss Babe” culture that women were forced into emulating in the recent past with the realization today that the “whole self” is more valuable to the organization and of course, themselves. Women can partake in leadership roles in an empowered mindset while staying true to the roles they play in and out of the workplace - be it mother, wife, caretaker or beyond. By reclaiming their own narrative in their own words, women are empowered to vocalize their ambition and assert their confidence.
Key Takeaways:
Individuals will walk away equipped to:
- Identify external misrepresentations in their own life - both past and present
- Use diverse amplification tools to dismantle misrepresentation systemically
- Embrace their roles inside and outside the workplace and strive towards creating an environment where each time necessity can be honored, as best as possible
Brand Building & Storytelling in the Digital Age
As a woman who single-handedly created a brand of feminine empowerment while flipping the one assigned to her by a Netflix show, Aparna shares how she has leveraged digital platforms to construct her brands, built positive-sum networks and created a relationship with the media that amplified her message.
By presenting an actionable “masterclass” of tactical strategy and instruction on brand building across social media channels, Aparna gives audience members a tangible “how to” guide that with wide-ranging application. She dissects how she built her personal brand, how a corporation can use the same principles to build its brand and how various platforms demand a unique presentation of information in order to succeed in storytelling. From using the traditional media to someone’s personal advantage, creating mission-driven storytelling through TikTok/Instagram and using their own words by authoring books, blogs and articles, Aparna clearly sets out the myriad of options in the digital world that can be utilized for brand building.
Key Takeaways:
Individuals will walk away equipped with the information to:
- Start building a personal or corporate digital brand from scratch
- Identify each platform’s unique way to present a brand successfully
- Deliver value and impact-driven storytelling through a simple, methodical framework
The Age of Authenticity: Bringing Your Whole Self to Work
With the onset of the Great Resignation, there was also a great awakening: People want to bring more of their authentic selves to work. In these past 3 years, many individuals constructed unique alternate visions of work within their existing career path, while some left the corporate workplace altogether to embark on entrepreneurial pursuits. Great leaders wanting to retain their employees know that a person’s unique experiences are a competitive advantage to a team, as is the personal brand these individuals are building to further enhance the team messaging. As a “recovering attorney” who left practicing law after 10 years in 2020, Aparna will speak to the changing culture in the workplace that demands that individuals are not only allowed - but also supported - in bringing their authentic selves to the workplace. While telling her own stories of adversity through her disability, race and gender, Aparna brings light to the importance of sharing such stories in a corporate environment in order to facilitate a more tolerant and open-minded collective. Aparna shows that the natural byproduct of an organization taking action to create safe storytelling spaces is undeniable confidence and authority in not only each person, but the organization as a whole.
Key Takeaways:
Individuals will walk away with:
- An understanding that their unique roles in varied facets of their life are an asset in the workplace and can be harnessed to enhance their career trajectory and their individual happiness
- A desire to empower ERG groups within the organization with their own participation, or in the alternative, a desire to create new groups that serve themselves and their colleagues
- Recognizing the power of allyship in increasing positive relationships and far-reaching tolerance in the workplace
