Biography
Alex Sheen is a four-time TEDx speaker and the Founder of because I said I would, an international social movement and nonprofit dedicated to the betterment of humanity through promises made and kept. Sparked by a tragedy in his life, Alex created a concept called the Promise Card and began mailing cards to anyone who requested them at no cost. Since 2012, over 9.81 MILLION Promise Cards have been distributed to over 153 countries. In 2013, Alex left his Corporate Strategy Lead position at a leading software company to dedicate himself entirely to the nonprofit.
Alex is the author of the upcoming book because I said I would. that is due for release in 2019. Alex’s unique perspective on accountability, commitment and self-control developed both from his responsibilities in leading a global effort about keeping promises and his personal experience fulfilling his own promises.
Alex’s personal promises include:
- Walking 245 miles across the entire state of Ohio in under 10 days to fulfill a promise to the three Cleveland women who were held captive for 10 years.
- Volunteering at 52 different nonprofit organizations in a single year.
- Promising children with cancer trips to Disneyland and personally delivering 100 tickets.
Alex’s work has been featured on CNN, ABC World News with Diane Sawyer, TODAY Show, Good Morning America, NPR, Fox News, Los Angeles Times, CBS Nightly News and many other programs. He has been featured on the cover of Spirit Magazine and honored as a Steve Harvey “Harvey’s Hero.”
Alex’s efforts in social media have been featured in BuzzFeed’s annual “Most Important Viral Videos” and his viral posts have made the #1 spot on the front page of Reddit.com over 10 times.

It’s too easy to say “I’ll get to it” or “tomorrow.” In many ways, we have become numb to the disappointment from broken commitments, and this numbness can enter our homes, our workplaces, our schools, our communities…But Alex Sheen believes that every individual has the strength to become a person of their word.
Alex will deliver a keynote speech up to 60 minutes long about the importance of honoring your promises. He mixes emotion, humor, and inspiration as he tells deeply moving stories from the because I said I would movement. Alex also shares moments from his personal journey launching and building this viral social movement.
Alex expertly employs video media and visually striking imagery to keep audiences engaged throughout his keynote.
His keynote concludes with a strong call to action that connects the Promise Card to the personal lives of each audience member. Every person attending the keynote then receives 10 Promise Cards at no cost.

“Life of a Promise” Workshop
In his “Life of a Promise” workshop, Alex dives deeper into themes explored during his keynote. Alex combines evidence-based and peer-reviewed research with riveting stories and collaborative activities. This leadership workshop is an interactive and thought provoking experience designed to give individuals the tools to be accountable in their personal lives. Each attendee will receive a workshop materials binder to follow along and take notes, a package of 10 promise cards, a pen, and a wristband.
