Biography
Alberto M. Carvalho has served as Superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) since February 2022. Since then, he has led the development and implementation of the District’s 2022-2026 Strategic Plan, as well as LAUSD’s Education Transformation Office, Cultural Arts Passport, and Family Academy. Through his efforts, LAUSD has also strengthened relationships with local municipalities, made progress in greening schools, and secured upgraded credit ratings, generating millions in savings.
Prior to LAUSD, Carvalho led Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). During his 14-year tenure, M-DCPS became one of the nation’s highest-performing urban school systems, winning the 2012 Broad Prize, earning systemwide accreditation from AdvancED, and receiving numerous accolades from the College Board and Magnet Schools of America. As a result of his transformational leadership, Carvalho has been recognized as Superintendent of the Year by AASA, the Council of the Great City Schools, and the National Association for Bilingual Education.
Carvalho has been appointed to several boards, committees, and task forces, including the National Assessment Governing Board and the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. He currently serves on the Advisory Committee for the Harvard Program on Education Policy and Governance, the Homeland Security Academic Partnership Council, the Posse Foundation, and the Aspen Institute’s Planet Media Task Force, among others.
