Richard Buery, CEO of Achievement First and APB speaker, has been appointed the new chief executive officer of Robin Hood. The non-profit is New York’s largest poverty-fighting organization. Buery will join Robin Hood in September.
“We are proud to name Richard Buery as the new CEO of Robin Hood,” says Dina Powell McCormick, Global Head of Sustainability and Inclusive Growth at Goldman Sachs and vice-chair of the board at Robin Hood. “After an extensive and thorough process, the search committee unanimously agreed that he has the experience, leadership and commitment to serving the most vulnerable in New York and will enable us to help families regain their footing, get kids back on track and New Yorkers back to work.”
Buery says he is excited to be joining the organization, which has been helping lift families out of poverty in New York City for more than 30 years. “I have spent my life and career working on behalf of New York City families, and Robin Hood has been a part of that journey every step of the way,” says Buery. “Leading Robin Hood at this moment of profound transformation in our City, one that poses significant risks and possibilities for its most vulnerable residents, is truly the opportunity of a lifetime. I am so grateful to Robin Hood for their faith in me, and I am excited about the opportunity to work with our staff, our donors and especially our partners as we fight poverty in New York City.”
Buery comes to Robin Hood with extensive experience in the nonprofit sector. As CEO of Achievement First, he managed a network of 37 public charter schools that provide excellent education to 15,000 students across New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Before Achievement First, he served as Chief of Policy & Public Affairs for the KIPP Foundation, which has a national network of over 224 college-preparatory, public charter schools in 20 states and the District of Columbia educating nearly 100,000 early childhood, elementary, middle and high school students. Buery is a graduate of Yale Law School and Harvard College.
