Call to Action for COVID-19 from APB’s Mary Robinson & The Elders
22 Apr 2020
The Elders has issued a call to action to the G2O on taking immediate and coordinated health and economic measures in response to COVID-19. APB speaker and former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, is a chair of The Elders, and she is fully on board with this initiative.
In the call to action, it states, “The communique from the G20 Extraordinary Leaders’ Summit on March 26, 2020 recognised the gravity and urgency of the entwined public health and economic crises, but we now require urgent specific measures that can be agreed on with speed and at scale.” The Elders want emergency support for global health initiatives led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and to restore the global economy, which will require world leaders to commit to more funding.
The Elders are independent global leaders working to help the world progress in the areas of peace and human rights. Robinson brings to the table thought leadership as a former head of state, a grandmother’s passionately felt concern for the future and the compelling stories of the thousands she has met traveling the world as a champion for climate justice, human rights, gender equality, and corporate responsibility. Mary Robinson believes that the longer-term solution is a radical reinvention of global public health and financial architecture.
