12 Nov 2019
APB speaker Vaclav Smil, a renowned scientist, professor and thought leader has released his much-anticipated new book Growth: From Microorganisms to Megacities via the MIT Press. Smil’s expertise in the realms of climate, energy and consumption have made him a larger-than-life figure in the scientific discussions around our society’s response to climate change, especially the potential of energy transitions.
In his new book, Smil argues that to “ensure the habitability of the biosphere” we must de-prioritize and even move beyond growth, which for most of human history has been the philosophical and tangible engine moving societies forward. Smil’s perspective makes scientific expertise accessible to the layperson without oversimplifying the complexities at hand. Bill Gates says of his writing, “There is no author whose books I look forward to more than Vaclav Smil.”
