APB’s Carl Bernstein Takes On Rick Santorum Over Trump’s Russia Lies
04 Mar 2019
On the heels of Michael Cohen’s stunning testimony before Congress, the news media continues to look to Watergate legend Carl Bernstein for insightful analysis and no-holds-barred commentary. In an attention-getting exchange on Anderson Cooper 360, CNN political analyst Bernstein countered a jaw-dropping statement from former Republican presidential candidate and Trump defender Rick Santorum. “The president doesn’t tell the truth about a lot of things fairly consistently,” said Santorum. “So the fact that he’s not telling the truth about Russia fairly consistently, at least in the eyes of the people around here, why is that any different? I mean, it’s not like he’s doing something out of character with the Russia investigation that he’s not doing in other areas.” Responding to what the Huffington Post has called “the most bizarre defense of Trump yet,” Bernstein countered that Trump’s lies about Russia differ greatly from his typically inconsistent truth-telling. “There is a real specificity to his lying about Russia. There’s a specificity to him drafting that statement on the plan. There’s a real specificity to almost all of the lies that try to contradict whatever that day’s breaking news is—very specifically. He’s on point. It’s a very careful denial when it comes to Russia.”
Bernstein was also featured in a recent Newsweek article that drew parallels between the fall of the Nixon administration and the current scrutiny of President Trump by Congress and the Mueller Investigation. When asked to compare Michael Cohen with key Watergate figure John Dean, Bernstein was quoted as seeing key differences. "But what is similar is that both witnesses explained the White House cover-up, the presidential cover-up, if indeed this testimony is credible," Bernstein noted. "It goes to helping us understand why the President has been lying, day in and day out, about all things Russian."
Currently a political analyst for CNN and a contributing editor at Vanity Fair, Bernstein made history and won the Pulitzer Prize for uncovering the Watergate Scandal with his partner, Bob Woodward. Sharing insights gained during more than 50 years as a reporter, Bernstein’s thought-provoking commentary and masterful storytelling bring a powerful sense of history to today’s headlines.
