U.S. Surgeons General Respond to Transgender Ban in U.S. Military
07 May 2018
The Pentagon’s proposal on the transgender military ban has led U.S. Surgeons General including M. Joycelyn Elders, David Satcher, Richard Carmona and Regina Benjamin to sign a dispute statement.
M. Joycelyn Elders and David Satcher originally released the statement to rebut the Pentagon’s announcement on medical fitness of transgender troops. It states, “An expectation of certainty is an unrealistic and counterproductive standard of evidence for health policy—whether civilian or military—because even the most well-established medical treatments could not satisfy that standard.”
Surgeons General Richard Carmona and Regina Benjamin have also signed this statement, enforcing that there is no valid medical reason to exclude transgender individuals from being a part of the U.S. military.
