Wil Haygood to Release New Book Early as Miami University’s Freshman Read
03 Jul 2018
Wil Haygood, New York Times best-selling author of The Butler and Showdown will be presenting his much-anticipated new book, Tigerland: 1968-1969: A City Divided, a Nation Torn Apart, and a Magical Season of Healing to incoming first year Miami University (Ohio) students weeks in advance of its national release. Tigerland, Haygood’s eighth book, tells the uplifting story of teams from a poor, black segregated high school that won two state championships in the same year, uniting a racially charged community in the aftermath of the assassination of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy. Haygood will premiere Tigerland at an exclusive convocation event for first year Miami students on August 24. Last year, Showdown, Haygood’s acclaimed biography of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, was the common read for incoming Loyola University Chicago School of Law students, with Haygood delivering an inspirational convocation address. Showdown has also been named to the 2019 and 2020 Choose to Read Ohio booklist.
A longtime APB speaker, Haygood, is a Pulitzer-nominated journalist who worked at The Boston Globe and The Washington Post. He now teaches at Miami University (Ohio) as a Boadway Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence in the department of media, journalism and film. Tigerland will be released nationally by Penguin Random House on September 18, 2018.
