Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Nominated for Outstanding Children’s Literature

APB speaker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been nominated for a NAACP Image Award for Becoming Kareem: Growing Up On and Off the Court. The book, written especially for young readers, chronicles how Abdul-Jabbar overcame a childhood made difficult by racism and prejudice to become a basketball legend and icon.
The NAACP Image Awards celebrates the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film, and also honors individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors. Abdul-Jabbar won two Image Awards in 2013 for his children’s book, What Color is My World? The Lost History of African American Inventors and for his sports documentary, On the Shoulders of Giants—The Story of the Greatest Team You’ve Never Heard Of. In 2016, his book, Writings on the Wall: Searching for a New Equality Beyond Black and White was nominated for outstanding literary work-nonfiction.
