APB's Brad Meltzer Helps Former Teacher Find Organ Donor Through Social Media
03 Sep 2015
APB speaker and best-selling author Brad Meltzer recently helped his high school history teacher, Ellen Sherman, in a huge way through the remarkable power of social media. Sending out a call for support to his 100,000 plus social media followers, Meltzer found her a kidney for a life-saving surgery.
In 2013, Meltzer dedicated his best-selling book History Decoded: The 10 Greatest Conspiracies of All Time to Ellen. However, when Meltzer reached out to tell her of his good news, she delivered some news of her own: “…she said, ‘I need a kidney. I’m dying and I need a kidney…” says Meltzer, remembering the email in which she asked for help.
After a year and a half, and a second push on social media from Meltzer, a match was found and Sherman was given the life-saving surgery she needed. Both Sherman and her donor are out of the hospital and doing well.
