Biography

Joe Weinman is one of the most well-known, insightful, provocative and entertaining thought-leaders and global keynote speakers in cloud computing, networking and information technology strategies such as social, mobile, big data and the Internet of Things. As the author of Cloudonomics: The Business Value of Cloud Computing, he focused on cost, performance and user experience optimization via the cloud. In his forthcoming book, Digital Disciplines (Wiley CIO, 2015), he focuses on digital strategies, and suggests that not only does IT matter, it can be a key enabler of corporate strategy and today, even corporate survival.

Weinman’s recent research builds on the timeless business classic The Discipline of Market Leaders, by Michael Treacy and Fred Wiersema. He argues that companies must pursue one or more of four generic strategies, which he calls digital disciplines. Information excellence is the new operational excellence, requiring real-time data to optimize a variety of manufacturing and operations processes, such as field support or port logistics. Solution leadership is the new product leadership, linking smart products to cloud services, partner ecosystems and social networks. Customer intimacy has evolved to collective intimacy, where analytics run on massive data sets can drive individualized recommendations ranging from movies to patient-specific therapies. Accelerated innovation is the latest wave of innovation, with traditional research labs expanding to embrace open innovation and then onward to idea markets, crowdsourcing and contests.

Weinman’s background spans R&D, operations and engineering, sales and marketing, product management and corporate strategy. A former executive at Bell Labs, he has been awarded 21 U.S. and international patents. He led emerging technologies and services strategy for AT&T Business and AT&T corporate. At HP, he had P&L responsibility for a multi-hundred million dollar software business, and most recently, he was senior VP for cloud services and strategy and a leading data center, cloud enablement, and interconnection firm.
Joe Weinman received his Bachelors and Masters in Computer Science from Cornell University and UW-Madison, respectively, and has completed executive education at the International Institute for Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland. He has appeared on broadcast TV in the U.S., Europe and Asia; appeared on The New York Times Timescast, TheStreet.com, and dozens of web videos; and been quoted hundreds of times in the international press.

Named one of the “Top 10 Cloud Computing Leaders,” by TechTarget, Weinman has keynoted and lectured hundreds of times on 6 continents, at institutions including Boston University, NYU, Ohio State University, the University of Pennsylvania, Hong Kong Polytechnic and the University of Rennes, at corporate events for companies such as AT&T, Cisco, EMC, HP, IBM, and at a variety of organizations/events such as the United Nations, Forbes Telecosm, Milken Institute Global Conference, Cloud Expo, South by Southwest, and many others. His work has also appeared in the print or online editions of The New York Times, Businessweek, Entrepreneur, Forbes, Wired, CNN Money, Information Week, GigaOm and CIO, as well as many others. Called “a brilliant strategist” and at the forefront of cloud computing thought leadership, Weinman’s fascinating keynotes offer mind-opening insights which help audiences realize the enormous potential of the cloud. In turn, he helps companies optimize their IT investment and position themselves to exploit the technology revolution for competitive advantage and success.

Digital Disciplines

Joe Weinman describes, in understandable terms, what leading companies such as Netflix, GE, Nike and Amazon are doing to leverage information technology to create competitive advantage. He has discovered four generic strategies: information excellence, solution leadership, collective intimacy and accelerated innovation, which differ substantially from the business strategies available only a few years ago. Rather than offering indecipherable platitudes, he lays out the critical steps that any company, regardless of vertical, can follow to exploit today’s and tomorrow’s digital technologies. For example, innovation has followed a long history from individual inventor and tinkerer, to “shop invention” such as Edison’s Menlo Park Lab, to the first true industrial research lab at GE, through a period of “open innovation.” Now, however, innovation must also encompass ad hoc relationships through idea markets, crowdsourcing and challenges/contests such as the Netflix Prize or GE’s FlightQuest. Products are becoming smart, digital and cloud-connected, enabling solution leadership strategies such as the Nest Thermostat but also the Nike Hyperdunk+ Basketball shoe, which has pressure sensors that can connect to cloud services for activity tracking and on to social networks. Weinman also explains how to leverage common threads across the disciplines, such as behavioral economics and gamification.

Cloudonomics

This talk is for select audiences only. It is highly relevant for cloud and information technology practitioners, vendors, service providers, investors and analysts, and uses extremely quantitative analysis to examine utilization benefits associated with workload aggregation and implications for cloud market provider size; latency reduction through service node dispersion and its implication for public cloud economics; trade-offs in network architecture and performance benefits from intelligent network services; optimal breakeven points for hybrid clouds based on workload statistics; and quantifies benefits associated with provisioning interval reduction in light of demand characteristics.
