Biography

Best-selling author, investigative journalist, true-crime writer and EMMY-nominated television producer Casey Sherman examines hope, resilience and courage under fire in some of the most captivating stories of our time — from the greatest small boat rescue in U.S. history to his own personal search for justice in the notorious Boston Strangler case.

He made international headlines with his rigorous and startling re-investigation

He made international headlines with his rigorous and startling re-investigation of the murder of his own aunt, Mary Sullivan, believed to be the youngest and final victim of the Boston Strangler. He chronicled the case in his bestselling thriller Search for the Strangler: My Hunt for Boston's Most Notorious Serial Killer (Grand Central Publishing, 2005), which Mystic River author Dennis Lehane hailed as "a model of investigative reporting that turned my blood to ice."

In his maritime masterpiece The Finest Hours: The True Story of a Heroic Sea Rescue (Henry Holt & Co., 2014) — now a Disney blockbuster starring Chris Pine, Casey Affleck and Eric Bana — he told the inspiring story of four young Cape Cod Coast Guardsmen who saved the lives of 32 men on a capsized oil tanker in 1952. Then he investigated and wrote Boston Strong: A City's Triumph Over Tragedy (ForeEdge, 2015), the definitive account of the terrorist bombings that exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon in April 2013, resulting in one of the largest manhunts in U.S. history. Sherman focused his gaze on the stories of the courageous survivors of the attack as they struggled to rebuild their lives. Boston Strong — based on Sherman's book and investigation — is soon to become a major motion picture from 20th Century Fox starring Mark Wahlberg.

His other books include Animal: The Bloody Rise and Fall of the Mob's Most Feared Assassin (Northeastern, 2013), the story of brutal Mob enforcer Joe Barboza, and Bad Blood: Freedom and Death in the White Mountains (UPNE, 2012), a true-crime account of the long-standing rural feud between a New Hampshire police officer and the young hell-raiser who shot him, resulting in a standoff that left them both dead. The book was a finalist for the prestigious New Hampshire Literary Prize for Non-Fiction.

He is also a contributing writer for Esquire, Huffington Post, Boston Magazine and FOX News, and was nominated for an EMMY Award for his work as a television news producer for WBZ-TV. He has appeared on more than 100 television programs, including segments for CNN, FOX News, The Today Show, C-SPAN, Unsolved Mysteries, The History Channel, ABC World News Tonight, The CBS Evening News, Discovery, The Travel Channel and The View.

Sherman was born in Hyannis, Massachusetts in 1969 and graduated from Fryeberg Academy and Boston University. A gifted storyteller and commanding speaker, he has performed his one-man show Tales of Suspense at venues around the country, including the historic Wilbur Theatre in Boston.

In Boston Strong, Police Detective Danny Keeler suddenly takes command of the biggest crime scene in the history of the city. His engaging presentation celebrates the human spirit and motivates audiences to develop the leader within.

Our Finest Hours: Studies in Teamwork

“In the Coast Guard they say, you gottta go out. They don’t say you gotta come back in.” So said Bernie Webber, the hero of The Finest Hours before embarking on what many said was a suicide mission. Author Casey Sherman turns this thrilling sea rescue into an inspiring case study of the power of teamwork. Then, he takes you to Boston Strong to examine how first responders and ordinary citizens banded together during the Boston Marathon bombing.  Casey’s captivating tales of teamwork under fire champion how we can all work together to overcome even the most impossible odds — imparting valuable lessons for teams, organizations and everyday life.

The Power of Preparedness

At any moment, we could be called upon to put years of training to the test. Are you and your team ready? Casey examines how the training and preparedness of the Coast Guard Crew in The Finest Hours made the difference during a killer storm at sea.  He also shares a firsthand and behind-the-scenes look at the Boston Marathon Bombing, focusing on the proactive steps taken by hospital personnel and law enforcement that saved countless lives. His masterful storytelling makes the skillful methods and actions deployed in crisis universally resonant and applicable — motivating audiences to be ready for whatever comes their way.

His stirring storytelling captures the courage of men and women who summoned their inner strength to soar above it. Whether he’s profiling Boston Marathon bombing survivors rebuilding their lives or taking audiences into the center of the storm in The Finest Hours, Casey’s immersive presentation leaves audiences awed by the power of the human spirit and the possibilities of their own potential.
